Actually he'd found a mile bay running into Baffin Island. On land he met Inuit Indians who laughed at his alien band. They'd been hearing about Europeans since Leif Ericson.
Then Inuits kidnapped five of his crew. Frobisher snatched up some mineral samples, took a hostage, and headed home. Back in England, one of his samples looked like it might contain gold. The Royal assayer said no -- it was fool's gold. But England was hungry for the kind of wealth Spain had been looting out of Central America. That rock had to be gold. Finally they found an Italian assayer who said it was low-grade gold ore. So merchants formed a Cathay Company and sent Frobisher back to the Arctic.
The Queen named him the Admiral-of-Cathay. He set up a small fort on Baffin Island. His most recent biographer, James McDermott, characterises Frobisher as:. He was not at ease or patient in his dealings with the courtiers, merchants, or scientists who were involved with the business and technological operations behind the expeditions, preferring the company of his mariners and the open sea.
As a fearless and energetic commander who led by example and from the front lines - an imprudent quality which led to his death from a gunshot wound - he won the affection of his crews and was prepared to risk his own life to preserve theirs.
Yet he was unable to inspire most of his officers, who in the case of the Arctic expeditions at least often had superior abilities and judgement to his own, and with whom he jealously competed for authority. Yet, to his credit, the third Arctic voyage in particular was a significant technical achievement , both in terms of navigation and of the conduct of a large expedition into dangerous, little-known waters, with very little loss of life.
The heroes of history are rarely supermen; they are human beings, with human failings. It is for their exceptional actions that we judge them heroic. As Professor T. Symons notes of Martin Frobisher:. Back to Exhibitions. His most recent biographer, James McDermott, characterises Frobisher as: "a man possessed with the absolute will to achieve, yet lacking the intuitive qualities of the true achiever Frobisher promised much and achieved nothing of great note, but he did it with an energy which makes him a somewhat sympathetic character.
