An example of this is shown historically: When the Lutherans gave their first public confession of the faith in Augsburg in , the Roman theologian Johann Eck, leader of 26 Roman theologians who were to give the Roman response to the Lutherans, was reported to have said, "With the fathers I would dare to refute it [the Lutheran doctrine], but not with Scripture. Lutherans believe a person is saved by God's grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.
However, this does not mean that a Christian does not do good works, nor that good works are optional. It is just that when it comes to salvation all that matters is faith in Jesus because faith receives Jesus' perfect holiness and the forgiveness of sins He won for us on the cross. To put it differently, faith alone saves but faith is never alone! The Roman Catholic Church, while at times using similar language, still officially holds that faith, in order to save, must be accompanied by or "infused with" some "work" or "love" active within a Christian.
The authority of the pope. Unlike the Roman Catholic Church, Lutherans do not believe the office of the papacy as such has any divine authority or that Christians need to submit to the Pope's authority to be "true" members of the visible church. Differences remain about both the number and the nature of the sacraments. Roman Catholics speak of seven Sacraments while Lutherans tend to speak of only two or three.
More important than number is how the Sacraments are understood. Lutherans believe in the real presence. We confess in our Augsburg Confession of , the basic confession of Lutheranism, in the tenth article: "Our churches teach that the body and blood of Christ are truly present and distributed to those who eat the Lord's Supper [1 Corinthians Heaven and Hell: Lutherans see heaven and hell as literal places.
Heaven is a realm where believers enjoy God forever, free from sin, death, and evil. Hell is a place of punishment where the soul is eternally separated from God.
Individual Access to God: Luther believed each individual has the right to reach God through Scripture with a responsibility to God alone.
It is not necessary for a priest to mediate. This "priesthood of all believers" was a radical change from Catholic doctrine. The Lord's Supper: Luther retained the sacrament of the Lord's Supper , which is the central act of worship in the Lutheran denomination.
But the doctrine of transubstantiation was rejected. While Lutherans believe in the true presence of Jesus Christ in the elements of bread and wine, the church is not specific in how or when that act occurs.
Thus, Lutherans resist the idea that the bread and wine are mere symbols. Purgatory: Lutherans reject the Catholic doctrine of purgatory, a place of cleansing where believers go after death, before entering heaven. The Lutheran Church teaches that there is no scriptural support for it and that the dead go directly to either heaven or hell. Salvation by Grace through Faith: Luther maintained that salvation comes by grace through faith alone; not by works and sacraments.
This key doctrine of justification represents the major difference between Lutheranism and Catholicism. Luther held that works such as fasting , pilgrimages, novenas , indulgences, and masses of special intention play no part in salvation.
Salvation for All: Luther believed that salvation is available to all humans through the redeeming work of Christ. Scripture: Luther believed the Scriptures contained the one necessary guide to truth. In the Lutheran Church, much emphasis is placed on hearing the Word of God. The church teaches that the Bible does not merely contain the Word of God, but every word of it is inspired or " God-breathed. Sacraments: Luther believed the sacraments were valid only as aids to faith.
The liturgical calendar lays out the seasons, saints and celebrations throughout the year. Intercession by saints is highly criticized within the Lutheran church and has been argued for by the Catholic Church. Lutheranism is a major branch of Western Christianity.
The church identifies with the teaches of Martin Luther, a 16 th century German reformer. His efforts to reform the theology and practices within the church launched the Protestant Reformation. Lutherans are the third largest Protestant movement, only after Anglicanism and Pentecostalism.
Their membership is estimated to be around 80 million congregants worldwide. Local Lutheran congregations are part of a regional or national organization called a synod. Lutherans believe in two sacraments, described as rites, which have the command of God and to which the promise of grace has been added. Lutherans believe that baptism is necessary to salvation and through it is offered the grace of God.
Children are to be baptized and will receive God grace through the act. They do, however, reject the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation. They care nothing about the sophistical subtlety by which they teach that bread and wine leave or lose their own natural substance and that there remains on the appearance and color of bread but is not true bread. It is in perfect agreement with the Holy Scriptures that there is, and remains, bread as Paul himself calls it in 1 Coll The bread which we break.
Lutherans state that the Old and New Testament both show that God and Jesus are two separate entities. They also believe that the Holy Spirit comes from both the Father and the Son. They utilize the words of the Athanasian Creed:. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost is all one: the glory equal, the majesty coeternal.
The Catholic and Lutheran Churches split, partially because of the difference in belief systems. The split between the Lutheran and Catholic church was made public with the Edict of Worms.
This condemned Luther and banned the citizens of the Holy Roman Empire from defending or propagating his ideas. If individuals were caught doing so, they would have to forfeit half of their property and the seized property would then be halved with part going to the imperial government and the remained to the individuals who brought forth the accusations. It is observed on November 1 st by those not only in the Lutheran Church, but the Roman Catholic, Methodist and Protestant churches as well.
All Saints Day comes from a conviction that there is a spiritual connection between those in Heaven and those remaining on Earth. The Catholic Church honors all who have passed to the Kingdom of Heaven. The Methodist tradition relates to giving God gratitude for the life and death of the saints and remembering them all.
Individuals throughout Christian history are also celebrated as are people who have personally guided one to faith in Jesus. Even with mundane concept a Mother is venerated, celebrated.
What is wrong with Christians? I consider myself Catholic even though I do not go to church much. I say my prayers morning and night and I obey the 10 commandments. The blessed Mother… God is watching those that do not honor His Mother! A true Catholic do not become or go somewhere else to pray and honor God.
The Catholic Church has changed. The Lutheran church was founded out of anger against the Pope. To me anything born out of disrespect and anger, has not validity; however, I believe God is merciful and I am sure many Lutherans and others are good people and God is just! People will be just that and we must see that under God there is no difference among us. God love us all! Christ teach us to pray and included there the prayer of confession and it was stated again in 1;john It was his apostles and as we all know they were already sanctified and were living, at that time, under the Old Covenant.
You are also right in that John taught that we are to confess our sins and our sins will be forgiven. Unfortunately, what you left out was the context in which John was writing. You forgot to ask yourself whom it was to, that John was writing. As it turns out he was not speaking to a group of unconverted people; he was; in fact, speaking to a group of Christians. But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth. I have never read a NT verse that instructs individuals to pray a sinners prayer to be saved.
Have you? If so I would love to know which verse it is. A little hint to assist your search; the Church began after Jesus died on the cross. Heb Happy hunting and God bless! PS- I thought I would include a list the of purposes of baptism alone with the verses where they can be found. You may be surprised to find that there are not any baptism verses that say that baptism is a symbol or a likeness as many preachers today claim. I have been reading what you all have said and stopped.
Because everyone seems to to be claiming that they KNOW the Word better than someone else, when in fact none of us know, or will know, the Word perfectly and what it means until we make it to heaven. Personally, I am believing and living out the Word of God the best I can and am trusting God, not leaning on my own understanding, to lead me the rest of the way home. Then, and only then, will we be able to say as a fact that we are saved. If you feel differently, I suggest praying about it and studying the Word further, as I will not argue over the truth, the Word of God.
Just food for thought. I love you all. Im geeting confused with the diffrence between christian and lutharin. I think were thinkin more than we should as long as you belive in what happened and have neverwitnessed it your loved in gods eyes for your faith. I was born in a christian family. And the reason im still christian is because of prays that i noticed were answered. Rite away or through out time. I think if you belive in christ thats all you need.
Theres no argueing between religons like say chritian or lutherin. If you believe you belive thats all you need to be saved. But dont take advantage of that by beliveing but living wrong try to do rite. He knows…. I can think of several things that NT scripture states we must do to be saved.
Not even a non believer will argue this point. What does scripture say? John There is your verse. Good conversations. Yet in Genesis 3 22 God said See! The man has become like one of us…like one of us…who is us? Father the Son and the holy ghost..
Lutherans do not believe in transubstantiation which is that the bread and wine become the actual body and blood of Jesus. Lutherans believe in consubstantiation that the stuff of Jesus is present along side of the bread and wine. This is scientifically true as well as doctrinally true.
Some protestants believe that the communion supper is only a memorial. Lutherans and Catholics believe that it is more than that. However, Lutherans do serve grape juice as an option to those who receive communion.
There is an error in this article. Martin Luther changed the Eucharistic celebration of the Mass to that of consubstantiation. I second everything Tom has said. The reason is because every answer is in The Good Book!!! Psalm May Christ be with you all! A Disciple is a follower of Jesus Christ and His teachings. The reason for the many churches are that they are families of Christian believers with different personalities and therefore Christians looking for a church home should go where they fit personally assuming the Bible is honored and followed.
James also tells us faith without works is dead. The new testament tells us a lot about being baptized for the remission of our sins. Well, like, what about the leper who was told to go bathe in the jordan 7 times? He could have believed and had faith whole heartedly that Jesus was the Son of God, but unless he did went in the Jordan 7 times, he was still gonna have that disease.
Baptism does not save…. Baptizing babies is pointless! That is what is wrong with Lutheranism. Thank you very much, this is total lack of knowledge. Lutherans does not baptize babies. I got baptized when I was Catholism rather requires batism of babies. Lutherans DO baptise babies. I was and so were my children.
It is not a requirement, but they do baptise babies. I feel such pity for you all, arguing, yet again, in the name of God. He did not give his life for us to have us arguing this way. Put your energy into making yourself more Christ like instead of worrying about what others do. It is not our job to judge. I am very grateful that God understands the sin nature of ALL of us.
Not one of you out there is without sin, even when you become a Christian. Take inventory of your daily thoughts. It is a daily challenge to become more like Christ.
They vary in intensity, but overall come from the same man-made Restoration Movement. These are Christians yes I called them Christians who judge all of Christendom by their man-made hermeneutic.
They will blast you with tons of proof-texted Scripture that they see through a homemade lens. This you have chirch of Christ doctrines of men. Their hermeneutic causes them to apply tons of laws to the Gospel because they tirelessly hunt for approved example, direct command or necessary inference to substantiate their legalistic view and sophistry. Now we all have doctrine and it is usually different in some way because men have spoiled it, even in my own tradition.
But, church of Christ…wake up…your men were no more immune to infallibility as mine. Stop using fallacies to make people feel small. Like you, I have Scriptural reference to every thing I believe. I love your comparison of Lutheran, Baptist and Christian doctrines. Talk about an ad-hoc way to argue. Where is the love that Christ commanded you to have?
Hello Trey, I believe you to be sincere in your comments, however, you made a mistake. The CoC though having honest intentions, are, in my opinion, too legalistic at least those that I have met. I am simply a follower of Christ, and a devout student of the scriptures. I do not believe that there will be any demoninations in the next life, therefore, I reject them now. Those that will be saved are those that obey the will of the Father not the doctrines of men such as Luther mentioned in the title question.
If this is a duplicate please forgive me. There was a glitch when I submitted my comment. I sort of agree with that. Thus creating the church and creating a way for anyone and everyone to practice the faith. Kind of like bee keepers. The truth:you are right Jesus never started religion but a relationship with him there is a huge difference between knowing about Jesus and actually knowing him personally. We do not need priest to intercede for us as we have direct access to God as a Child of God.
The Bible also says that the coming Messiah will come in the likeness of Moses and establishes a new and better covenant than of Old Covenant given to Moses. So though his earthly ministry was to mainly the Jews, his coming was to establish the Kingdom of God. As some have stated, we need to be a cheerful giver to God. Whatever we feel as a hindrance, whether from other or not, we give with joyful heart.
Regarding Baptism, Jesus continued the baptism of repentance that John of Baptist was doing. It was a decision each person makes to be obedient to God. It is not another persons decision whether or not to be repentive and obedient. Therefore, if an infant cannot make that choice, it is not following the pattern set by Jesus.
Salvation does not come thru Baptism. We are saved by Grace. But once saved, we need to try to follow the pattern Christ set for us. Disobeying Baptism is one of free choice and not of sin. When we are saved we have become like Adam before his Sin. We are not exempt from walking a walk of Obedience once we are saved. Jesus instituted the Lord Supper before his death not after.
