If older leaves are the ones yellowing and dropping, the problem is probably soggy growing conditions which can destroy roots by cutting off their supply of oxygen. Other causes of yellow, dropping leaves are drought which doesn't apply lately! I doubt the whiteflies are the culprit unless you seed lots of them congregating on the wisteria. You would also see their pupae which resemble yellow to chartreuse, flat scales the size of a typed "o" on the undersides of the leaves.
For more blooms, try cutting back the rampant shoots every two weeks during the summer. How do you feed wisteria? For best results, feed wisteria plants every spring. In very well-drained soil, also feed with sulphate of potash in summer.
Can I prune wisteria in October? When to Prune Wisteria — October is the optimum time for the autumn pruning of wisteria. Most of the foliage will have dropped. February is the good time for winter pruning — but no later than early March. Can wisteria be pruned hard? Pruning Mature Wisteria Plants Cut back new growth and main branches to just two or three buds to keep the plant neat, tidy and ready for the forthcoming growing period.
Hard pruning may be required if there are dead stems to deal with, or particularly woody areas of the vine causing gaps in the foliage and flowering. What does Wisteria symbolize? The abundance of the Wisteria flowering vine also signifies our own expanding consciousness. Is Wisteria poisonous to touch? The tempting beauty of wisteria is alluring but do you know that it is a mildly poisonous plant, mainly for cats and dogs. Every part of it is poisonous, especially seeds.
If only few seeds are ingested they can cause mild abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea and depression of the central nervous system.
Here we give answers to many of the common problems encountered. They are grouped by the area of the plant affected: shoots; leaves and flowers. All of these problems prevent adequate water uptake through the roots, leading to wilting and die-back. These are scale insects , of which a number of different species can affect wisteria. Found most commonly is brown scale. In south-east England a much larger blackish brown scale, wisteria scale , may sometimes be found.
Heavy infestations of the latter scale can lead to branch dieback. Irregular dark brown marks and blotches, usually with a yellow margin, are a symptom of infection by the fungal disease powdery mildew. On most types of plant this disease produces conspicuous white fungal growth on the leaves, but on wisteria it can be very difficult to see any growth at all on the blotches without using a microscope.
Wisteria can also be affected by viruses so if the problem does not respond to mildew controls and persists from year to year, virus may be involved.
Regular and timely pruning can help to increase the flowering potential of the plant by producing a framework of flower spurs. In contrast, heavy pruning or pruning in early summer will disrupt successful flowering. Join the RHS today and get 12 months for the price of 9. Take action Why take action? Check with your county extension office for a confirming diagnosis. Yellow leaves are also a sign of insufficient iron, often caused by the soil becoming too alkaline.
This interferes with the availability of iron to plant roots. Apply an acidifying agent, such as soil sulfur, or organic acidic soil amendments, such as peat moss. Foliar sprays containing iron also restore normal leaf color. Take care not to make the soil too acid, since wisteria prefers neutral to alkaline soil.
